Specialized ELD Program Using Common Core Standards
Traditionally elementary school ELD (ESL) is focused around push in and pull-outs that follow a homeroom teacher schedule. However, in a school where ELD learners make up more than 60% of the student population this approach does not always produce solid results. A more radical approach was required to create time and focus for ELD learners. Students were placed into groups based on needs and skills determined by WIDA testing and NWEA MAP scores. These groups met within the daily schedule for 40 minutes 3 times per week. All students, even those who were considered to be native English speakers participated. It has been an overwhelming success for student outcomes in the ELD program.
